Avène (full name Eau Thermale Avène) is a French pharmacy brand launched in 1990 by the pharmaceutical group Pierre Fabre. It is built around thermal spring water from the village of Avène-les-Bains in southern France, at the foot of the Cévennes mountains. People had used that water for skin complaints since the 18th century, and Pierre Fabre bought the local hydrotherapy centre in 1975 to study it with modern methods.

The brand focuses on sensitive, reactive and irritation-prone skin. Researchers identified a bacterium in the water, Aquaphilus dolomiae, which the maker links to the water's soothing properties and uses as the basis for several actives.
