La Roche-Posay started around a spring. The thermal water of the French town it's named after is rich in selenium, and dermatologists used that water to calm irritated skin long before there was a brand to sell. Pharmacist René Levayer set up the Laboratoire Dermatologique in 1975, and L'Oréal has owned the company since 1989, placing it in the same active-cosmetics division as Vichy and CeraVe.
The range is built around skin needs rather than trends. Anthelios covers sun protection and carries L'Oréal's own Mexoryl filters; Effaclar targets oily, acne-prone skin; Cicaplast Baume B5 is a soothing repair balm that sells heavily through pharmacies; Toleriane and Lipikar are aimed at sensitive and very dry skin. Selenium-rich thermal water, niacinamide and patented UV filters turn up across the formulas.
