Alanyl glutamine (INCI Alanyl Glutamine) is a dipeptide of two amino acids, alanine and glutamine. In a formula it works as a moisturising and conditioning ingredient: it supports the water balance of the stratum corneum and helps the skin feel more comfortable. Amino acids are part of the skin's natural moisturising factor, so such peptides are familiar to it. On efficacy this is a supporting moisturising ingredient. It provides basic comfort and softness, but should not be seen as a standalone anti-ageing active, as the evidence base is modest. Used topically the dipeptide has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without restriction. Tolerance is good. The irritation and allergy potential is low, which suits sensitive skin. Amino acid ingredients usually cause no reaction in most people.
