Saccharide hydrolysate (INCI Saccharide Hydrolysate) is a mix of natural sugars made by breaking plant polysaccharides into simpler molecules. In a formula it works as a humectant: it draws in water and helps hold it in the stratum corneum, leaving the skin softer. On efficacy this is a supporting moisturising ingredient. Sugars deliver basic hydration well, but the hydrolysate should not be seen as a strong standalone active; it is part of a formula's moisturising system. Used topically the ingredient has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without restriction. Tolerance is good. The irritation and allergy potential is low, which suits sensitive skin. Sugar ingredients are familiar to the skin and cause no reaction in most people.
