Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Natural exfoliant. Safe for most, but people with tree-nut allergy should avoid.
Sweet Almond Seed Meal is finely ground sweet almond seeds (Prunus dulcis). The press cake left after extracting almond oil. Mechanism. A mild physical exfoliant: round 0.3–1 mm particles remove the keratinized layer by mechanical friction without sharp edges (unlike fruit-pit scrubs). Contains residual almond oil (5–15%) that softens the skin during scrubbing. Where applied. Face and body scrubs (5–30%), cleansing foams, masks, products for hyperkeratosis areas (elbows, knees, heels). In Spain – Acofarma, Sesderma Acglicolic Hydrating Scrub. Safety. CIR confirmed safety of almond meal in cosmetics. Non-comedogenic (despite residual oil). Non-irritating at typical concentrations. Allergy controversy. Contains almond proteins – a food allergen class. In patients with almond allergy (about 0.5% of the Spanish population) topical use may trigger contact dermatitis and urticaria. EU labelling requires 'Prunus Dulcis' on the ingredient list. Not to be confused with apricot- or peach-pit scrubs (other allergens). Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Acceptable at any stage. During breastfeeding do not apply to the breast – risk of ingestion by the infant via milk (relevant if the mother has food allergy). Particularly suitable for. Normal and oily skin without active acne, scrub 1–2× per week. Not for patients with almond allergy, active acne, rosacea, thin and sensitive skin. Sensitive-skin alternatives: PHA (gluconolactone), mild enzymatic peels (bromelain, papain).
