CI 17200 is a synthetic azo dye, also known as Red 33. The five-digit CI index is a number from the international Colour Index catalogue. INCI: CI 17200. In a formula it gives the product a red-pink shade. It is a colorant, not a skincare active. It does not act on skin and is added to the formula for color at low concentrations. Regulation. In the EU, cosmetic colorants are governed by Annex IV of Regulation 1223/2009, which lists allowed product categories and limits for each. CI 17200 has use restrictions (for example, not for eye-area products in some jurisdictions) that the maker observes. Tolerance. Irritation potential is low. Azo dyes are occasional contact allergens, so people prone to dye reactions should keep this in mind. Pregnancy safety: used in trace amounts, systemically negligible.
