CI 42090 is a synthetic triphenylmethane dye, also known as Blue 1 (Brilliant Blue). The five-digit CI index is a number from the international Colour Index catalogue. INCI: CI 42090. In a formula it gives the product a blue or greenish-blue shade. It is a colorant, not a skincare active. It does not act on skin and is added for color at low concentrations. Regulation. In the EU, cosmetic colorants are governed by Annex IV of Regulation 1223/2009, which lists allowed categories and limits for each. CI 42090 is on that list. Tolerance. Irritation potential is low. Synthetic dyes are occasional contact allergens, so people prone to dye reactions should keep this in mind. Pregnancy safety: trace amounts, systemically negligible.
