CI 16035, also known as Red 40 or Allura Red, is a red azo-type cosmetic dye. It is added in very small proportions to give the formula color and even out the product's appearance; it has no effect on skincare. This is a decorative ingredient, not an active. Its only function is aesthetic. It is approved for cosmetic use in the European Union within its conditions of use. Applied topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. On tolerance it is worth being precise. Irritation potential is low, but allergy potential is moderate: as with several dyes, in sensitized people it can trigger a contact reaction. The large majority tolerate it without trouble, and anyone with reactive skin or a history of dye allergy should keep this in mind.
