Hydroxypropyl guar (INCI: Hydroxypropyl Guar) is a modified derivative of guar gum, a plant polysaccharide. In formulas it acts as a thickener and texture modifier: it adds body, smooths slip and stabilizes emulsions and gels. This is a functional component, not a skincare active. It does not act on the skin directly; its job is to give the formula a pleasant consistency and keep it homogeneous. That helps the rest of the ingredients spread. Applied topically it has no meaningful systemic absorption, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without restriction. Tolerance is high, with low irritation and allergy potential, suitable for sensitive skin. As a plant gum derivative it rarely causes trouble and is not meaningfully comedogenic, which makes it comfortable on oily skin too.
