Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate is the dipotassium salt of glycyrrhizic acid extracted from licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra or G. uralensis). A biologically active compound – inhibits 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 and indirectly enhances the anti-inflammatory effect of endogenous cortisol. Where applied. Creams and serums for sensitive skin, post-procedure care, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, eczema products. Toothpastes and oral care. Concentration in finished products – 0.1–2%. Evidence base. Studies in Japan and Korea showed erythema and itch reduction of 30–40% over 2 weeks of 2% cream in patients with atopic dermatitis and contact eczema. Glycyrrhizate is included in OTC dermatologic preparations in Japan. Safety. CIR confirmed safety in 2007. Hypoallergenic, non-irritating, non-comedogenic. Systemic absorption through intact skin is minimal. Pregnancy and lactation – safe topically. Systemic high-dose oral licorice can cause pseudohyperaldosteronism with hypokalemia and arterial hypertension, but in cosmetic form on intact skin there is no effect. Especially suitable for. Sensitive skin, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, post-procedure recovery, tendency to hyperpigmentation (mild brightening through melanogenesis suppression).
