Gentian root extract (Gentiana Lutea Root Extract) is obtained from the root of yellow gentian – a high-mountain European plant. In phytotherapy it is used as a bitter to stimulate digestion (Suze, Italicus aperitifs). Composition. Bitter glycosides (gentiopicroside, amarogentin), xanthones, flavonoids, triterpenoids. Amarogentin is one of the most bitter natural substances. Where applied. Alpine and anti-aging formulas for mature skin, toning lotions, hair products. In Europe popular in Swiss brands (Valmont, Niance, La Prairie). Evidence base. In vitro – antioxidant effect, tyrosinase inhibition (Olennikov 2015). Clinical RCTs of topical gentian extract are very few; marketing rests mainly on traditional use. Safety. CIR has not made a separate assessment. At cosmetic concentrations (0.1-1%) contact reactions are rare. Cross-reactivity possible in patients allergic to wormwood and chamomile (Asteraceae family; gentian is Gentianaceae, however). Pregnancy – use with caution. Oral gentian is contraindicated in pregnancy (stimulates GI and uterus). Topically at cosmetic concentrations no direct contraindications, but avoid as a precaution. Lactation – no data.
