Hexyl laurate (INCI: Hexyl Laurate) is an ester-type emollient formed from hexyl alcohol and lauric acid. It softens skin and gives a dry slip that absorbs fast, without the greasy film typical of heavier oils. It is a functional component, not a treatment active. It improves feel, helps spread other ingredients and gives a light finish to creams, fluids and makeup. It does not deeply hydrate or treat skin: its role is sensory and supporting, and it does it well. Topically its systemic absorption is negligible, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is high: low irritation potential and low allergy risk, fine for sensitive skin. Comedogenicity is low (1), so most oily skin tolerates it, though strongly acne-prone skin may want to watch its response.
