For lightening there are three small RCTs from different groups: pigmentation decreased by weeks 4–12, but none is a clean instrumental comparison with vehicle. One compared 1% with 2% hydroquinone without placebo, another added 0.4% to niacinamide, and the third assessed results only clinically. An antioxidant effect in skin has not been measured

About this ingredient

Hexylresorcinol (4-hexylresorcinol) is a resorcinol derivative also used as a food preservative and an antiseptic. In lab tests it inhibited tyrosinase (Shariff 2022) and NF-κB in fibroblasts (Kaur 2015). No study has measured an antioxidant effect in skin. It is added to serums and creams for dark spots and uneven tone, often together with niacinamide or retinol. Three small RCTs from different groups support lightening by weeks 4–12, but none compares hexylresorcinol alone with vehicle using an instrument. In a split-body trial (29 women, 12 weeks), 1% hexylresorcinol and 2% hydroquinone reduced colorimeter pigmentation equally, with no placebo arm (Wu 2023). In a manufacturer's split-face RCT (44 women), adding 0.4% to a 3% niacinamide formula lightened spots (L*) more than niacinamide alone (Shariff 2022). In another manufacturer's vehicle-controlled RCT (59 women, 8 weeks), pigmentation improved on clinical grading only (Kaur 2015). Wu 2023 and Shariff 2022 recorded no product-related adverse effects. A case of contact dermatitis to hexylresorcinol has been reported (Burrows 1982). In lab tests it activated estrogen receptor alpha at nanomolar concentrations (Amadasi 2009); what this means for skin use is unknown. There are no data on use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
