Hydrolyzed keratin (INCI: Hydrolyzed Keratin) is a protein broken down into small peptides so it dissolves in water and spreads evenly through a formula. On the skin it forms a thin film that smooths the surface and helps hold some moisture. It shows up mostly in moisturizers and hair products. On efficacy, this is a functional conditioning ingredient, not a treatment active. It softens the feel of skin and improves the immediate sensory experience, but it does not fill wrinkles or rebuild the barrier from within. Its role is supportive. Applied topically it is not absorbed in any meaningful way, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without concern. Tolerance is high: irritation and allergy potential are both low, which makes it suitable for sensitive skin. At usual concentrations it is not comedogenic.
