A nourishing plant oil. Safe.
Milk thistle seed oil (INCI Silybum Marianum Seed Oil) is a plant oil rich in linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid that skin recognizes well. In a formula it nourishes and softens, supplying lipids that support the barrier. As an emollient it does its job, and the high linoleic profile is interesting for skin prone to dryness or flaking. It is not an active with dramatic clinical results but a solid supporting oil: it hydrates through light occlusion and improves feel. It also carries natural antioxidants that add stability. Topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy. Comedogenicity is very low (1 of 5), suitable for most skin types. As with any plant oil, very oily or acne-prone skin may prefer lighter textures.
