Hydrolyzed Jojoba Esters is a water-soluble form of jojoba waxes obtained by hydrolyzing Simmondsia chinensis oil. Unlike the source oil, it is better compatible with water phases and is used in oil-free formulas. Mechanism. Forms a thin film on skin and hair, softens the surface, holds water in the stratum corneum. Composition is close to human sebum, hence good tolerance and no disruption of sebum balance. Where applied. Oil-free serums, gels, conditioners, micellar waters, body lotions (0.5-3%). In Spain in Sesderma Sensyses, Babaria, Avène Hydrance Légère. Evidence base. Direct clinical RCTs on hydrolyzed jojoba esters specifically are few. Data extrapolated from regular jojoba oil – improved barrier function and skin softening (Pazyar 2013). Objective measurements of TEWL and elasticity support the moisturizing effect. Safety. CIR rated jojoba and its derivatives safe in cosmetics (2008, re-evaluated 2019). Allergic reactions are very rare, comedogenicity low (0-2 on Klein). Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Suitable for oily and acne-prone skin, and for hair with oily roots.
