Hydroxyethylpiperazine Ethane Sulfonic Acid (HEPES) is a synthetic buffering substance. INCI: Hydroxyethylpiperazine Ethane Sulfonic Acid. In a formula it stabilizes the pH, and it is also linked to support of natural exfoliation: HEPES helps the enzymes that break the bonds between dead stratum-corneum cells, so it is added to renewing and tone-evening products. It is a functional component with a mild desquamation-support effect rather than a potent acid exfoliant. Pregnancy safety. At cosmetic concentrations topical use is systemically negligible, with no evidence of harm. It can be used during pregnancy and lactation. Tolerance. Irritation and allergen potential are low, suitable for sensitive skin.
