BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
An enzyme plant extract. Safe.
Papaya fruit extract (INCI: Carica Papaya Fruit Extract) is a plant extract containing the enzyme papain and natural sugars. In formulas it is valued for gentle exfoliation: papain helps loosen dead cells on the surface, leaving the skin looking more even. Its effect is supportive rather than dramatic. Enzymatic exfoliation is real but mild and depends heavily on the product's concentration and pH. As a contribution to a more even tone it makes sense; as a main treatment for pigmentation it falls short of better-studied actives. Topically there is no meaningful systemic exposure, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is well tolerated: irritation and allergy risk are both low. Enzymatic exfoliation is gentler than strong acids, a good option for skin that cannot handle aggressive acids.
