Next-generation postbiotic – nanovesicles secreted by Lactobacillus into the medium during cultivation. Carry proteins, lipids and microRNAs of the parent cell, without live bacteria. In vitro studies show anti-inflammatory potential on keratinocytes and immune cells. Few human clinical RCTs so far.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Promising postbiotic component. Mechanism – modulation of keratinocyte inflammatory response via microRNA cargo. Clinical RCTs are limited, most data come from in vitro and animal models.
Lactobacillus Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) are 30–200 nm nanovesicles secreted by Lactobacillus bacteria into culture medium. They carry cell-wall proteins, phospholipids and parent-cell microRNAs but contain no live microorganisms. Mechanism. In vitro studies show EVs reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α) in HaCaT keratinocytes (Kim 2020, Park 2022) and suppress NF-κB activation. Claimed effect – skin barrier and microbiome support without the risks of live probiotics. Where applied. Korean recovery serums and creams for sensitive skin – Mediheb, Aestura, Manyo Factory. Still rare in Europe, only premium niche serums. Formula concentrations are not disclosed. Evidence base. Human RCTs are few (n<50) and in vivo effect has not been confirmed in independent work. CIR and SCCS have not published a separate assessment – the ingredient is reviewed as part of postbiotic cultures. Pregnancy and lactation data are absent; manufacturers recommend avoidance as a novel technology with limited clinical base. Alternative for sensitive skin in pregnancy – niacinamide, panthenol, centella.
