Melatonin is a natural hormone that regulates sleep in the body and works as an antioxidant in skin. INCI: Melatonin. In a formula it is used as an antioxidant component, more often in night products: it helps neutralize free radicals and supports defense against oxidative stress. Topical melatonin has an antioxidant and photoprotective base, but as a standalone anti-aging active it is moderately studied. At cosmetic concentrations it has no systemic hormonal action. It is a supporting antioxidant. Pregnancy safety. Systemic absorption with topical use is low, but because of the hormonal nature of the substance it is treated with caution in pregnancy; the decision is best made with a doctor. Tolerance.
