Tree peony root extract (INCI: Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract) is a plant extract containing paeonol and other antioxidant polyphenols. In cosmetics it is used for a soothing effect and to support a more even tone, mostly in formulas for reactive skin. As an active it is supportive, with evidence that is more lab-based than clinical. The antioxidant and calming action of peony is plausible, but its real contribution in a finished cream is modest and concentration-dependent. It works as a complement, not as a primary tone treatment. Topically there is no meaningful systemic exposure, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is well tolerated: irritation and allergy risk are both low. It suits sensitive skin. As with many plant extracts, an individual reaction is possible though uncommon.
