In a formula it lays a thin layer on skin that smooths the surface, reduces stickiness and improves the feel of the finish. On efficacy, place it this way: it is a functional sensory component, not a treatment active. It does not fix wrinkles or repair the barrier; what it gives is a drier, more pleasant feel and better spread of the product. In that role it works without pretension. For pregnancy and breastfeeding there is no reason for caution. It is a high-molecular-weight starch derivative that stays on the surface, so it can be used. Tolerance is high. Irritation and allergy are low, suitable for sensitive skin. Cationic starches are usually very well tolerated and give that soft-to-the-touch feel without weighing down the formula.
