Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme that in living cells neutralizes the superoxide radical. INCI: Superoxide Dismutase. In a formula it works as an antioxidant: it helps neutralize reactive oxygen species and support defense against oxidative stress. The biological role of SOD is powerful, but topical use in cosmetics has limits: the large protein penetrates skin poorly and is unstable in a formula. So it is a supporting antioxidant whose effectiveness depends heavily on how it is stabilized, not a treatment with a large clinical base. Pregnancy safety. Topical use is systemically negligible, with no evidence of harm. It can be used during pregnancy and lactation. Tolerance. Irritation and allergen potential are low.
