Tannic Acid is a plant polyphenol found in bark, galls and some fruits. In toners, masks and serums it acts as an antioxidant and has an astringent effect that gives a tighter-pore feel by lightly contracting tissue. Its backing as a topical antioxidant is reasonable, though modest next to more studied actives. The astringent effect is real but temporary: it tightens the surface rather than permanently shrinking the physical pore. A solid supporting component in the protection part of a formula. For topical use it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy potential. At high concentrations the astringent effect can feel somewhat tight on very dry skin.
