A soothing plant extract. Safe.
Arnica flower extract (INCI Arnica Montana Flower Extract) is a botanical extract drawn from the flowers of this mountain plant. It contains sesquiterpene lactones and flavonoids. In cosmetics it is added mainly for a soothing profile, to give skin a sense of comfort and ease the look of redness after mild irritation. On efficacy, it acts as a supporting component within the soothing category. There is a long tradition of topical use, but evidence for cosmetic claims stays modest, so it is fair to treat it as a formula adjunct rather than a lead active. Applied topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy potential. Even so, arnica belongs to the Asteraceae family, so people allergic to that family (daisies, ragweed) may have an occasional reaction; most do not.
