Cetylpyridinium Chloride (INCI: Cetylpyridinium Chloride) is a cationic antiseptic. In a formula it slows microbial growth and is common in oral care products, as well as a preservative or supporting antimicrobial agent in cosmetics. This is a functional preservation and antiseptic ingredient, not a skin-care active. Its role is to protect the formula and provide antimicrobial action, with no effect on wrinkles, pigmentation or barrier. At in-use cosmetic concentrations systemic exposure is minimal, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance at cosmetic doses is good. Irritation and allergy potential are low, suitable for sensitive skin. At high concentrations cationics can irritate mucous membranes or skin, but that does not apply to in-use doses; it is not linked to clogged pores.
