In a formula it is used as a natural fragrance with a bright lemony-herbaceous aroma, and a mild antibacterial action is sometimes noted. It is an essential oil in a fragrance role, not a skincare active. It has no meaningful standalone skincare action on skin. Allergenicity. Lemongrass is rich in citral, counted among potential fragrance contact allergens and able to irritate skin. A reaction is possible in sensitized people, and the level is limited by IFRA standards. Pregnancy safety. At cosmetic concentrations systemic absorption is low and there is no evidence of harm, but with sensitivity to essential oils it is best introduced cautiously.
