Lithothamnion calcareum extract (INCI: Lithothamnion Calcareum Extract) comes from a calcified red alga rich in minerals such as calcium and magnesium. In cosmetics it goes into formulas as a mineral contribution and a skin-support component. Its efficacy deserves a calm look: most of the research has been done with oral supplements for bone health, not topical cosmetic use. In a cream it works as a supporting botanical and mineral component, with no proven skin effect on its own. Topically, systemic uptake is negligible, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good and the allergy potential is low. It fits sensitive skin without the usual issues. As with any extract, a prior patch test helps if your skin reacts easily.
