Ahnfeltia concinna extract (INCI Ahnfeltia Concinna Extract) comes from a marine red alga. In a formula it works as a moisturising and soothing ingredient: seaweeds carry polysaccharides that hold water on the skin and form a light softening film. On efficacy this is a supporting moisturising ingredient. Algal polysaccharides work reasonably well at holding moisture, but the extract should not be seen as a strong standalone active, as the evidence base is modest. Realistically expect a contribution to hydration and comfort within a formula. Used topically the extract has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without restriction. Tolerance is good. The irritation and allergy potential is low, which suits sensitive skin. Most people show no reaction.
