Hydroxyacetophenone (4-Hydroxyacetophenone) is an aromatic compound, antioxidant booster for preservatives. Produced synthetically from acetophenone. Mechanism. Scavenges free radicals and stabilizes the formula against oxidation. Boosts the efficacy of other preservatives (phenoxyethanol, benzoic acid) – allowing them to be used at lower concentrations and broadening antimicrobial coverage. Especially valued for "clean beauty" paraben-free formulas. Where applied. Serums, creams, emulsions (0.2-1%). Often in lines labeled "paraben-free" and "clean beauty". In Spain in The Ordinary formulas (distributed via Sephora and Druni), Caudalie, Rilastil, Sesderma C-Vit. Evidence base. Industry research (Symrise, Sederma) confirms synergy with phenoxyethanol and reduction of TBARS oxidation marker in the formula. There is no direct skin effect – this is a technological ingredient. Safety. CIR rated hydroxyacetophenone safe at cosmetic concentrations (2010, re-evaluated 2019). Irritation and allergic reactions are rare; isolated cases of contact allergy reported (Aerts 2017).
