Melanin (INCI: Melanin) is the natural pigment responsible for the colour of skin and hair. In cosmetic formulas it is included for its ability to absorb part of the UV radiation and for its antioxidant activity. Efficacy is worth calibrating carefully. Melanin absorbs light and neutralizes free radicals in lab studies, which is why it appears as antioxidant support and auxiliary photoprotection. But in a cream it does not replace a sunscreen filter or provide a measurable SPF: it works as a support ingredient within a wider protection strategy, not as a sunscreen on its own. Topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy potential, suitable for sensitive skin. Keep in mind that, being a pigment, it can add colour to the formula.

The Evigrade extension adds an evidence panel to iHerb, Sephora, Druni and 12 more stores. This ingredient and every other one in the product show evidence-tier, allergen risk and pregnancy/lactation flags at a glance.
Melanin is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
