Olive oil unsaponifiables (INCI: Olea Europaea Oil Unsaponifiables) are the part of the oil rich in sterols, squalene and tocopherols that does not turn into soap. In cosmetics they act as an emollient and barrier support, softening dry skin. On efficacy, they fit as a barrier-support ingredient with a reasonable basis. Plant sterols provide skin-akin lipids and help comfort and elasticity, with some backing in formulas for dry or mature skin. It is not an active with a dramatic effect, but it adds coherently. Topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good: low irritation and allergy potential, suitable for sensitive skin. Comedogenicity is low (1 of 5), comfortable for most skin types, with individual observation on very acne-prone skin.
