This turns a fatty material into something soluble in water and compatible with cleansing bases. In a formula it softens skin and eases the tight feeling after washing, which is why it is common in gentle cleansers and gels. As an active it is a supporting functional component: it adds comfort and a light emollient touch, but it does not treat or rebuild skin. It handles that sensory role reliably. Topically its systemic absorption is negligible, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is well tolerated: low irritation potential and low allergy risk, fine for sensitive skin.
