A soothing plant extract. Safe.
Spiraea Ulmaria Extract (meadowsweet extract) supplies natural salicylates and tannins. In a formula it works as a soothing component with a mild astringent edge: the tannins help refine the feel of the skin and the salicylates add a light regulating effect. As an active it is a supporting component. The salicylate content is low and is not the same as an exfoliating salicylic acid; its effect on oil is modest. It is useful for comfort and a more matte feel, not a proven acne treatment. Topically the systemic contribution is negligible, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. As natural salicylates at low concentration, it does not call for the care high salicylates require. Tolerance is good: low irritation and allergy, suitable for sensitive skin. It has no meaningful comedogenic profile. Someone with a known salicylate allergy may prefer to patch test first.
