Stearyl dimethicone (INCI Stearyl Dimethicone) is a waxy silicone, solid at room temperature. In formulas it gives a soft, velvety texture, improves slip, and leaves a thin film on the skin that smooths the feel and helps reduce water loss. It works as a functional texture and emollient component, not as a treating active. It improves the use experience and product finish more than it changes the skin over the long term. It handles that sensory role and light occlusion well. Topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good: low irritation and low allergy risk. Its comedogenicity is very low (rating 1), so it is rarely a problem; still, on very oily or acne-prone skin it is worth watching how the skin responds to formulas rich in this kind of silicone.
