Truffle Extract is a premium marketing component in cosmetics. Obtained from the fruiting bodies of Tuber fungi (truffles) traditionally used in haute cuisine. In cosmetics it appears in luxury lines (SK-II, La Mer analogues) as an 'elixir of youth'. Composition. Contains polysaccharides (beta-glucans), polyphenols, amino acids, and minor amounts of B-group vitamins. Actual use level in finished formulas is usually <0.1%. Where applied. Premium serums and creams, face masks. In Spain it appears in exclusive Mesoestetic Genesis Energy lines and rare Sesderma ampoules. Often a marketing ploy to justify a high price. Evidence base. No clinical RCTs with isolated truffle extract on skin exist. Truffle beta-glucans have mild in vitro antioxidant effects but don't outperform better-studied sources (oat or mushroom glucans from reishi, shiitake). Safety. CIR has not evaluated it separately. Known allergic reactions are few, but fungal proteins have allergenic potential, especially in patients with prior mycoses. Pregnancy and lactation – no data, but topical absorption is minimal and theoretical risk is nil. Realistic expectations. A marketing ingredient with no notable clinical effect. The product's cost reflects positioning, not extra benefit to the skin.
