Caprooyl Phytosphingosine (INCI identical) is a ceramide-precursor lipid, derived from phytosphingosine with a short fatty chain. In cosmetics it supports barrier repair and helps the skin retain water, in synergy with finished ceramides. Its efficacy is best understood as that of a barrier-support ingredient. It provides building blocks for skin lipid synthesis and improves the comfort of dry skin within a barrier-restoration approach. It does not act as directly as a complete ceramide, but it adds coherently to repair formulas. Topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good: low irritation and allergy potential, suitable for sensitive and reactive skin. It is a quiet, well-accepted ingredient in barrier creams.
