A salt form of phytosphingosine, a ceramide-precursor lipid. It helps rebuild the barrier and calm skin. Well tolerated.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
A barrier-restoring lipid. Safe.
Phytosphingosine HCl is the salt form of phytosphingosine, a sphingolipid that acts as a precursor to the skin's own ceramides. It appears in low concentrations in creams and serums aimed at barrier support. On efficacy: a functional ingredient with a reasonable biological rationale. Phytosphingosine feeds into ceramide synthesis and has a mild calming profile, so in barrier-repair products it gives real but modest support, weaker than finished ceramides. On its own it won't deliver a dramatic effect; it works as part of a lipid system rather than a standalone active. During pregnancy and breastfeeding topical use is fine. Systemic absorption is negligible. Tolerance is high, with low irritation and allergy potential. Suitable for sensitive and reactive skin. Not comedogenic at typical use levels.

Phytosphingosine HCl is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
