A barrier-restoring lipid. Safe, well tolerated.
Hydroxypalmitoyl Sphinganine is a lipid related to ceramides, derived from sphinganine. In cosmetics it is used as a barrier-repair ingredient: it supplies a lipid building block akin to those skin uses naturally, helps retain water and supports a calm, comfortable feel. It appears in creams and serums for damaged barrier and reactive skin. On efficacy there is a coherent basis. Ceramide-type lipids and their precursors make sense for reinforcing the barrier and reducing water loss, and this component fits that role. It works well as a barrier-supporting active within a well-built formula, especially combined with other physiological lipids. For topical use in pregnancy and breastfeeding there are no risk signals. Systemic absorption from skin is minimal, so it can be used in these stages. Tolerance is good. Low irritation and low allergy potential, especially suited to sensitive skin and a compromised barrier. Most people see no reactions.
