Gelidium Cartilagineum Extract is an extract from a red alga rich in polysaccharides, the same ones that form the basis of agar. In a formula it acts as a humectant and film-former: it captures water, improves texture and leaves a thin layer that gives a soothing, comfortable feel. You see it in moisturizers, masks and formulas for sensitive skin. This is a functional humectant and texturizing ingredient. Its contribution to surface hydration and sensory feel is reasonable, but it is not a treatment active with notable biological action. It is better seen as a good supporting agent than as the star of the formula. With topical use it has no systemic relevance, so you can use it during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is very good: irritation and allergy are both low, which makes it a fit for sensitive skin. It does not dry the skin or add comedogenic load, so it sits well in delicate, soothing formulas.
