PEG-4 is a short-chain polyethylene glycol that acts as a humectant and solvent. It draws water into the surface layer of the skin and helps dissolve and blend other ingredients, which makes stable, even formulas easier. This is a functional ingredient. It gives light hydration and improves solubility, but it is not a corrective active: it does not treat wrinkles or pigment. Its value is in the base of the formula, as support that spreads and holds a little water. A known, reliable role in formulation. Applied topically there is no meaningful systemic absorption, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good: low irritation and allergy potential, suitable for sensitive skin. Short-chain PEGs rinse off well and do not clog pores; on very dry skin their humectant effect is light and pairs well with an occlusive.
