Pomegranate Seed Oil (Punica Granatum Seed Oil) is oil from pomegranate seeds. Unique for its content of punicic acid – a conjugated omega-5 fatty acid up to 65-75% of composition. Also contains tocopherols, phytosterols, carotenoids. Where applied. Anti-aging serums, mature-skin creams, body products, hair products (1-10%). Common in premium lines. Evidence base. Aslam (J Cosmet Dermatol 2013) and Schubert (J Ethnopharmacol 1999) showed in vitro anti-elastase and antioxidant activity of punicic acid. Clinical topical RCTs in humans are few: Pacheco-Palencia (2008) – small study (n=20) showed skin texture improvement over 8 weeks. Standalone anti-aging effect is weakly supported – mostly in vitro and animal data. Safety. Hypoallergenic in most patients. In people with pollen allergy possible cross-reactivity (rare). Minimal comedogenicity (Fulton 1). Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Suitable in any product. Pomegranate juice and extracts taken systemically in pregnancy are studied as safe.
