Pomegranate extract (INCI: Punica Granatum Extract) comes from the pomegranate fruit and is rich in polyphenols, including ellagitannins. In a formula it brings antioxidant activity and is used to support skin's defence against oxidative stress and keep a firm look. On efficacy: pomegranate polyphenols have a reasonable antioxidant basis in vitro, though clinical evidence on skin stays moderate. We treat it as a supporting antioxidant active: it adds value inside a well-built formula but without promising a dramatic anti-ageing result on its own. In topical use it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without any foreseeable risk. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy potential, suitable for sensitive skin. As with any fruit extract, a sensitised person could react, though this is uncommon.
