In a formula they act as a humectant and film former: they create a light film that holds water at the surface and leaves a sense of comfort, which makes them common in serums and soothing creams. On efficacy, they are a supporting component in hydration and soothing. The supplier reports barrier improvement, but independent evidence is sparse, so it is reasonable to expect a humectant effect rather than a marked clinical result. Applied topically they have no systemic relevance, so they can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy potential, suitable for sensitive skin. Already-sensitized people may see an occasional reaction, though most do not.
