About this ingredient
Glycoproteins (INCI Glycoproteins) are proteins with attached sugar chains, often obtained from yeast through fermentation. In a formula they act as a humectant: the sugar part holds water and the protein part leaves a sense of comfort, which is why they appear in serums and in moisturizing and soothing creams. On efficacy, they are a supporting component in hydration and soothing. There is some supplier backing for skin conditioning, but independent evidence is modest, so it is realistic to expect a humectant effect rather than a clear clinical result. Applied topically they have no systemic relevance, so they can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy potential, suitable for sensitive skin. Since these are proteins, people already sensitized to yeast proteins may see an occasional reaction, though most do not.
