Lipophilic salicylic acid derivative linked to phytosphingosine (a ceramide precursor). Combines exfoliating and barrier-restoring properties.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
Small studies show a dual effect: keratolytic from the salicylic moiety and barrier-supporting from the sphingosine moiety. Gentler than free salicylic acid. No large RCTs.
Salicyloyl Phytosphingosine (Symrise trade names SymCalmin/SymRepair) is a hybrid molecule: salicylic acid linked to phytosphingosine (a ceramide precursor) by an amide bond. Combines exfoliating and barrier-restoring activity in one molecule. Mechanism. The molecule is lipophilic and penetrates the stratum corneum. Skin enzymes slowly cleave the amide bond – salicylic acid is released (a BHA exfoliant with anti-inflammatory, anti-acne action) along with phytosphingosine, which integrates into the lipid matrix and becomes part of skin ceramides. Where applied. Serums and creams for combination skin, products for post-acne marks, products for sensitive acne-prone skin, anti-aging formulas with mild exfoliation (0.1-0.5%). In Spain in niche brands and European indie formulas. Evidence base. Symrise published a series of studies showing barrier improvement, reduced inflammatory papules and smoother texture over 4-8 weeks. Few independent RCTs in the literature; evidence quality B/C, leaning on manufacturer data. Advantage over plain salicylic acid. Plain 2% salicylic acid is effective but irritates sensitive skin. Salicyloyl phytosphingosine gives mild prolonged exfoliation plus simultaneous barrier restoration – suitable for skin that tolerates pure acids poorly. Safety. EU CosIng permits use. Allergic potential is low. People with known salicylate allergy (aspirin sensitivity) – use with caution. Pregnancy and lactation – use with caution. Although the released salicylic acid concentration in skin is low, by analogy with plain salicylic acid in pregnancy manufacturers often label CAUTION. Pregnancy alternatives: azelaic acid, niacinamide, lactic acid.

CautionThe Evigrade extension adds an evidence panel to Wildberries, Goldapple, Letu, iHerb, Sephora and 12 more stores. This ingredient and every other one in the product show evidence-tier, allergen risk and pregnancy/lactation flags at a glance.
Salicyloyl Phytosphingosine should be used with caution during pregnancy. Consulting a dermatologist or OB-GYN is advisable.
