BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
An antioxidant plant extract. Safe, well tolerated.
Schisandra Sphenanthera Fruit Extract (INCI: Schisandra Sphenanthera Fruit Extract) is an extract from the fruit of Chinese magnolia-vine. It supplies polyphenols and lignans with antioxidant action and is used to calm skin and reduce surface oxidative stress. On efficacy, this is a supporting component. The evidence base for its cosmetic use is modest, and most of it comes from lab assays rather than human skin studies. It adds to an antioxidant formula, but no visible change should be expected from it alone. Because of its topical use and lack of systemic relevance, it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without concern. Tolerance is good: irritation and allergy potential are low. As with any botanical extract, a sensitized person may react, though most skin sees nothing.
