Alkanet root extract (INCI: Alkanna Tinctoria Root Extract) comes from a Mediterranean plant whose root contains alkannin, a red-violet pigment. In cosmetics it is used mainly as a natural colorant that brings warm tones to lip balms, oils and makeup, with some soothing effect attributed to its naphthoquinones. As a skincare ingredient it is a supporting component: its main role is decorative, and the evidence for skin benefits is modest. It colors more than it treats, and that is how to read it. Applied topically it has no meaningful systemic absorption, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without issue. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy potential. Still, as a colored plant extract, very sensitized skin could react occasionally; in most people no reaction appears.
