Schizophyllan (INCI: Schizophyllan) is a beta-glucan obtained from the fungus Schizophyllum commune. In cosmetics it works as a high-molecular-weight humectant: it draws water, forms a thin soft film on the skin and gives a calm, comfortable feel. On efficacy it is a solid supporting component. Beta-glucans have a reasonable basis for surface hydration and comfort, though the bolder claims about deep repair go beyond the available data. It hydrates and soothes reliably, without promising more. In pregnancy and breastfeeding topical use poses no problem; it has no systemic relevance. Tolerance is excellent, with very low irritation and allergy risk, suitable for sensitive and reactive skin. Reactions are rare.
