An antioxidant vitamin C derivative. Safe.
Sodium Ascorbate (INCI: Sodium Ascorbate) is the sodium-salt form of vitamin C. In a formula it works as an antioxidant and, depending on concentration and format, supports collagen synthesis and a more even tone. It is more stable than pure ascorbic acid. On efficacy, vitamin C has a solid evidence base as an antioxidant and brightener, so this is an active that works. That said, it depends on proper formulation: a useful concentration, the right pH and packaging that shields it from light and air. Well formulated, it delivers; poorly formulated or already oxidized, it does little. Applied topically it has no systemic impact, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, better than ascorbic acid, with low irritation and allergy potential. It does not clog pores and usually suits sensitive skin.
